HIFU

What is HIFU?

High-intensity Focused Ultrasound, also known as HIFU, is a non-invasive & non-surgical cosmetic skin tightening treatment that uses ultrasound to lift and tighten collagen and elasticity of the skin, for both men and women. HIFU works by heating small targeted amounts of soft tissue below the surface of the skin to a level where the tissue will contract, and the body will create new collagen. To achieve a significant lifting and tightening effect, heat is delivered to specific depths of tissue and this fantastic treatment can accomplish both without causing any injury to the surface of the skin. While HIFU won’t duplicate the results of a facelift, it is a clinically proven alternative for those not ready for surgery and may even be an option for clients who wish to extend the effects of previous cosmetic surgery they have already had.

How is HIFU performed?

During the procedure, your therapist will first start by cleaning the area that is to be treated, followed by the application of a topical numbing cream. You’ll numb for approximately 30 minutes before your procedure. A conductive gel, commonly referred to as ultrasound gel, will then be applied, and your therapist will begin treatment by using a handheld device to deliver the ultrasound over the areas being treated. Depending on the areas being treated, the procedure can take anywhere from 10 minutes to 1 hour, excluding the time you are numbing.

Who is a good candidate for HIFU?

HIFU works best on people who are older than 30, with mild-to-moderate skin laxity. People with photodamaged skin or a high degree of loose skin may need several treatments before seeing results. Older people with more extensive photo-aging, severe skin laxity, or very saggy skin on the neck aren’t good candidates and may need surgery. HIFU isn’t recommended for people with infections and open skin lesions at the target area, severe or cystic acne, and metallic implants in the treatment area.

Is HIFU Painful?

Clients should be aware that HIFU is known to cause mild discomfort during treatment. The heat released from HIFU can cause a deep tingling and warming sensation that some clients find to be unpleasant. Bony areas such as the jawline, cheekbone, orbital area, and forehead are known to to be more sensitive than other areas. Some clients respond well to taking Ibuprofen or Tylenol prior to their appointment.

How many HIFU treatments do I need?

A single HIFU treatment usually produces the desired results in the majority of patients, although individual results vary and some may need a touch up treatment. Your therapist will determine the course of treatment that is right for you based on your needs and goals. Some of our clients choose to repeat the procedure after 1 to 2 years to maintain their results.

How will I look and feel after each HIFU treatment?

After your HIFU treatment, It is normal for the area to feel tender, or sore, immediately following the procedure and lasting anywhere from 2-5 days. Results can be seen up to 9 months following the treatment and depends on the variety of various factors including age, health, lifestyle and diet, and how much pre-existing collagen there is to build on when having a procedure for the first time.

What is required prior to HIFU?

No specialized care is required prior to your HIFU treatment. We ask that you drink plenty of water whenever possible, and to wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment.
