Laser Hair Removal

Tired of Shaving?

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair. During laser hair removal, a laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the tube-shaped sacs within the skin (hair follicles) that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth.

How is Laser Hair Removal performed?

During the procedure, your therapist will first start by cleaning the area that is to be treated, followed by the application of a conductive gel, commonly referred to as ultrasound gel. Your therapist will then use a handheld device to deliver the pulsed light over the areas being treated. During the treatment you will be asked to wear protective eye goggles. Depending on the areas being treated, the procedure can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 1 hour.

Who is a good candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair, but it can be successfully used on all skin types.

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?

While Laser Hair Removal can cause mild discomfort, it should not be painful. The pulses of light are commonly described as feeling like a rubber band snapping on their skin. If you find your treatment to be incredibly painful, please be sure to let your esthetician know, as the settings are likely too high for your particular treatment. (A topical numbing cream can be applied to those who have sensitive skin, or are worried about any discomfort, prior to your treatment- please let us know if you’d like to be numbed when scheduling your appointment, as this requires an additional 30 minutes to your appointment time.)

How many Laser Hair Removal treatments do I need?

While everyone is different, most clients require a minimum of 6 sessions to remove most hair from an area. It is important to know that some clients may need more sessions and that complete hair removal is never guaranteed. Skin type, skin color, hair type, hair color, hormones, and lifestyle all contribute to the success of Laser Hair Removal Treatments.

How will I look and feel after each Laser Hair Removal treatment?

After your Laser Hair Removal treatment, you are free to resume normal activity. Most clients have zero side effects, with their skin looking and feeling completely normal. In some cases,  the treated area may look and feel like a slight sunburn. The area may be slightly pink in appearance or have minor swelling, but will dissipate within a few hours. Feel free to apply a cool, or iced compress, to help alleviate discomfort.

What is required prior to Laser Hair Removal?

Prior to your Laser Hair Removal treatment, you want to avoid any kind of tanning (sun, tanning bed, self tanners/lotions/etc), skincare creams that can cause irritation (retinols, acids, lightening creams, etc), and any forms of hair removal that completely remove the hair follicle (waxing, plucking, tweezing, etc) for at least 7 to 10 days. You will want to shave the area completely the day before your appointment to minimize any discomfort (NO waxing, plucking, or tweezing! Shaving ONLY!). We ask that you arrive at your appointment wearing loose, comfortable clothing.

What care is required after Laser Hair Removal?

After your Laser Hair Removal treatment, you should care for the area the same way you would care for a mild sunburn. You should avoid direct sunlight, apply sunscreen, avoid having hot water on the area treated, and avoid any vigorous exercise for 24 hours (to keep the skin from overheating).

What are the possible side effects of Laser Hair Removal?

Possible side effects may include, but are not limited to:

  • Skin sensitivity at the treatment sites
  • Pain or swelling at the treatment sites
  • Blistering
  • Pinpoint Bleeding
  • Redness or irritation at the treatment sites
  • Changes in skin pigmentation
