What is Laser Tattoo Removal?
Laser Tattoo Removal offers a method to lighten and/or remove a permanent tattoo. The laser works by breaking down the pigment in the tattoo. Over time and with more sessions as needed, the pigment will continue to be broken down and will be eliminated through the body’s natural lymphatic system. It is important to note that complete tattoo removal is not guaranteed, with several sessions being required to continuously lighten the pigment.
How is Laser Tattoo Removal performed?
During the procedure, your therapist will begin by cleaning the tattoo and surrounding skin. They will begin by using the handheld laser to shoot light into the tattooed area. You will feel the beams of light penetrate the skin and will also hear noise as the laser works, both from the machine itself and from the fans that operate continuously. The laser is attracted to the ink in the tattoo, and it shatters the ink into tiny crystals. The tattoo will then form a scab, which is where most of the ink will go. Some ink will also be absorbed into the lymphatic system.
Who is a good candidate for Laser Tattoo Removal?
Anyone with a regrettable tattoo, or one they’ve simply outgrown can qualify for Laser Tattoo Removal. The best candidates for are those with older tattoos as well as amateur (“stick and poke”) tattoos, as they are easier to remove than newer ones. Some colors are easier to remove than others, such as black, brown, dark blue, or green.
Is Laser Tattoo Removal Painful?
While Laser Tattoo Removal can cause discomfort, it should not be overly painful. The pulses of light are commonly described as feeling like hot needle pricks to the treated area. Most clients find Laser Tattoo Removal to be tolerable as it is usually a quick, straightforward procedure. (A topical numbing cream can be applied to those who have sensitive skin, or are worried about any discomfort, prior to your treatment- please let us know if you’d like to be numbed when scheduling your appointment, as this requires an additional 30 minutes to your appointment time.)
How many Laser Tattoo Removal treatments do I need?
Due to the many factors that contribute to the success of Laser Tattoo Removal Treatments, there is no way to know how many treatments a client might need. Factors such as age, skin type, skin color, tattoo age, tattoo color, and type of ink used all play a huge role in what is required to be removed. While we can probably guarantee you’ll need at least 3 treatments to lighten the pigment, we can’t guarantee the number of sessions you’ll need, or how light the tattoo can become. Most clients are never able to fully remove the tattoo entirely, although they are lightened significantly.
How will I look and feel after each Laser Tattoo Removal treatment?
After your Laser Tattoo Removal treatment, you will experience a mild sunburn look and feel that may last for a few days. Your therapist will clean the area and apply a topical ointment, followed by a protective bandage. You can apply a cool, or iced compress to help alleviate any discomfort, and take a pain reliever as needed.
What is required prior to Laser Tattoo Removal?
Prior to your Laser Tattoo Removal treatment, you want to avoid any kind of tanning (sun, tanning bed, self tanners/lotions/etc) and skincare creams that can cause irritation (retinols, acids, lightening creams, etc). We ask that you arrive at your appointment wearing loose, comfortable clothing.
What care is required after Laser Tattoo Removal?
After your Laser Tattoo Removal treatment, you should care for the area the same way you would care for a new tattoo. You should avoid direct sunlight, avoid using any lotions or creams, other that the suggested ointment, apply a medical grade sunscreen, avoid soaking the area or using high pressure water, and avoid any vigorous exercise for 24 hours (to keep the skin from overheating), and should expect the area to take roughly 5 to 10 days to heal, maybe even longer. You will need to apply a topical ointment with a bandage to keep the area moist and clean as it heals. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing that won’t get caught on the scabs that will form, or cause any friction/chafing on the treated area.
